A Love Affair with North Woods Vintage

Montauk_board

A while back my good friends Jeana and Grant (and myself of course) were looking for an adventure on a Sunday morning. We needed inspiration and a distraction from the real world. As any good friends do, we started with Mexican food and plans to take over the world. This quickly lead to an antiquing furniture hunt for things none of us needed nor intended to purchase.

The location: Andersonville

The goal: Inspiration and Fresh Air

The outcome: lot’s of laughing, dreaming and Les Bon Truvants-ing. Surely ruining the language, sorry about that Kristen and Grant!

Anywho, towards the end of our little adventure we stumbled upon Brimfield – a vintage, upholstery, furniture, blanket North Woods heaven. The place smelled like my house growing up, a tri-level with wood panelling on a little lake. The place made the things I once thought were ugly (but still remind me of home) and made them magnificent. Hello wool blanket upholstered chair from my childhood and probably yours, too? I love you.

Grant gasped, Jeana screeched, I squawked and we all gawked. The three of us – Michiganian, Wisconsonian née Minnesotan and Illinoisian, respectively – were surrounded by various aspects of our childhood. Multiple senses engaged, we were all mesmerized. This isn’t just a store you visit. This is a store you smell, touch, remember and dream your way through. My mobile pictures don’t even come close to doing this place justice, and the store’s website is being redone – this is all for you, the readers, benefit. You must visit this store and take it all in.

Want more info? Check out this write-up on Apartment Therapy, drop by the store’s blog and say hi to them @BrimfieldUS. Most importantly, go visit, and make sure to have a chat with the owners, they are as charming as their store.

Feeling blue…

…how ’bout you? (nothing to do with mood :)) What’s you current design color inspiration?

Bowls look great on a wall – considering ways to add color to apartment walls without paint.

There has to be a cheaper way to acquire this $295 bedside table. I love this one from White Attic in Andersonville, but it is unjustifiable. Would be a great DIY! Actually I love everything from White Attic – they have a lamp bar where you can create your own lamp design. Website is being remodeled, will make sure to share when it’s back up.

Family, Pride and Antiques

What happens when your father’s family has been in the country since the 1600’s? (It is traceable, I’m assured by my dad.) Really old stories. And really old furniture. One of my favorite pieces of furniture in my parent’s house is a desk from the late 1800s…so that’s what this post is about.

If you are bored by someone’s family history (that isn’t your family), stop reading.

Not a lover of antique furniture? Stop reading.

Interested by people that invent stuff and really old tables? I like you, and you should continue.

I come from a lineage full of engineers, inventors, patent attorneys and sailors. I lovingly call them tinkerers – they tinker with stuff to make it work. Example of this prowess? My grandpa, Captain (we sailed with him as children on Lake Michigan), had the caption, “I’ll fix that!” under his high school year book photo. As his engineering hobby progressed (and he learned that advertising just wouldn’t pay the bills, smart man) he became an inventor. Can you hear the pride? Yep, it’s boiling over in this post and I don’t care!

We have a series of old tables each with a crazy story – I’ll try to stick to the truth, although there are some fishermen in my family history as well. 😉

Not a fan of poorly taken photos? You’re already this far, might as well finish up the post.

First off – this drafting table. It was created in Worcester, Mass. before the turn of the century and all of the mechanics of the table still work. It currently lives in my parents informal dining area behind the kitchen table. It’s purpose? To hold binoculars, look good and start interesting conversations.

Tables

Now, the cool part.

Inside one of the drawers (above), my great-, great-, grandfather signed it C.L. Newcomb 1890. Besides being an awesome table – absolutely beautiful in design and engineering, it has his lead-written signature in precise cursive. Doesn’t get much cooler than that. Or does it? Stay tuned for another table story later this week.

Do you have any family pieces that make you proud of your heritage/lineage?

– E.G.S Nukem 2011 — doesn’t have the same ring as C.L. Newcomb 1890

The Devil went Down to Georgia

At the end of good days and bad, a phone call with my mom or dad and makes everything better. A good long chat is almost always finished up with a Dr. Seuss quote – “know what you know.” Well, here’s what I know: St. Patrick’s Day is always a holiday that makes me homesick. Thank goodness I’ll be down in Georgia with my family in no time at all!

I haven’t been there since the holidays. Look at my parents house, it snowed on Christmas Day. First time since like the 1880s or something wonderfully magical. We all know I love my snow!

Some of the adventures planned for my upcoming trip? Of course, I’ll start off daydreaming on a plane out of the city…

I’ll spend some time relaxing. Nothing better than a glass of sweat tea, fresh fruit, cheese and crackers out on the back porch listening to the birds. Probably do some more daydreaming.

Surely, my mom and I will have an awkward photo session. We begin with me scowling…

…and the shoot will result in one photo deemed “least awkward.”

Last but not least, there is an afternoon of fishing and relaxing out on Lake Allatoona in the works (weather permitting).

I should note these photos are collected from multiple trips to Georgia; I intentionally left out the less-than-dreamy shots including:
Sunburnt armpits
Mosquito bites the size (and shape) of Illinois
The copper head in my parents front yard (documented by my mom)
The lightening strike down the street that I watched and thought I was going to die.
…Followed closely by the three inch creepy-crawly centipede crawling on me – I think the little bugger was as scared of the lightening strike as I was!

Wish me luck down in the south – the forecast is looking like a balmy 73 degrees and sunny!

PS – While I don’t think the airlines would be too happy, do you think I can stick my boyfriend in my suitcase and bring him along too?

Yellow Inspiration for my Week

I love spending Sunday evening relaxing with the love of my life and reading design blogs!

I’ve been playing on Pinterest (courtesy of an invite from my co-worker Jessi) and literally cannot get enough. All the good ideas that I run into throughout the week that get lost in the mix of work and life finally have a home. If you know me, you know I was slow to get into the whole social media thing…but now, I keep finding these little nooks on the internet and falling in love.

I’ve been starting my mornings over on Houzz.com to put a little inspiration in my step and wowzers, it’s been working!

Sunday inspiration for the week: Yellow. I didn’t think I liked it until I realized that I kept loving rooms with dashes of the color. All started with this yellow room below. I like the canopy – I’m trying not to rule out studio-appropriate design ideas…

Kat (she blogs regularly at CitySouthern) has a nice ideabook on Houzz of yellow design ideas that add just the right punch of yellow. Here are some of my favorites.

Cabin Fever Yields a Hunt

Thank you February cabin fever for lighting the fire under my design-lusting brain, and getting me motivated! Something about the cold chill in the air has pushed the process to adulthoodification further this month. I’ve been plotting a move to a new neighborhood for a while now, but haven’t been willing to sacrifice an amazingly comfortable apartment for a good location. Things that drew me to the current apartment were double closets that line an entire wall of my bedroom, a brand new bathroom, updated kitchen with a sprayer nozzle on the faucet amongst other things. Sure, these might not be fancy-living luxuries, but closet space is a hot commodity and an updated bathroom is one a great detail. The thing that isn’t so luxury? The location. For everything I gain in the apartment, I lose in the one hour commute to civilization that I take daily. For about 10 months out of the year, I appreciate my long commute, it gives me much needed quiet time with a book. Who knew the best place to have quiet private reading time is in the middle of rush hour commute in Chicago?

Anyways, like I said, I’m plotting my next move. I’m obsessed with real estate, I look at apartments and houses for sale multiple times per week, I figured it’s time to get serious about my hunt and my planning. I need to find somewhere that cuts my commute in half, and will likely double my rent. After years in my current area, I’m ready to give myself the gift of location.

The mission:
Find new apartment

Requirements (doesn’t seem like a lot, but the pre-requirements are in the budget):
I’m looking for a one bedroom in a safe neighborhood with active (not overpowering) nightlife, shopping, community features and a bit of character. Ummm, I’ll call it what it is, I want to live in one of the nice neighborhoods in Chicago! It’s going to be an adventure, I’m easy to please when I like it, but I freak about the details. Carpet? Makes me want to cry. Tiny bedroom, no biggy. Smells? Don’t even get me started.

Move-out date:
Summer (yes, I’m planning six months ahead, I can’t help it)

The fun stuff:The most important part of any space is the way it makes the person inside it feel. I love warm spaces with a cool color palette. Industrial or character-filled details are the prettiest, I’m not afraid of a challenge, and I adore natural light. The best part? There is some required shopping. I have the big stuff, bedroom set (considering refinishing it with help of soon-to-be-launched Les Bons Truvants), television (it’s big and pretty and HGTV looks great on it), and the kitchen necessities. What I don’t have? Anything for the main living area… stay tuned for more details.

I leave you with my most important new apartment purchase to date. 12 stemless wine glasses, I can break six and still be set before moving!
