First few hours of vacation

PhotoPhoto_2Photo_3

Got in late last night to Atlanta, chatted with the folks out on our porch and went to bed. My mom’s got some great shots of her dog cuddling with my face while I slept. I, of course, didn’t notice it…

And now this morning, i’m drinking my morning coffee out on the porch listening to the trees blow in the wind and petting my cat. This is heaven.

Not sure what we have in store for the week, but I packed running clothes and bathing suits and that’s it so hopefully I’ll use those items in the next seven days. We’ll see!

Starting my morning off right

While I’ve already had two massive cups of coffee so far today, another one couldn’t hurt. Especially when it’s preceded by this morning note on my desk. Thank goodness for good friends, good coffee and good conversation – all of which I’ve already had today and it’s only 8:50 am.

A list for the next four months of life

Something about August makes me daydream like crazy. I posted about it yesterday, and I’m going to go ahead and post about daydreaming today. I am absolutely thrilled that in a few months there will be snow on the ground. Even better? We get to savor fall before the pretty glitter falls from the sky. Clearly, I’m so excited I can barely stand it.

Alright, so here’s what I’m most excited about:

Fall:

  • Hot apple cider
  • Sweat pants (don’t judge, I live in them in the fall)
  • Scarves
  • Football (college and NFL)
  • Boots, yep, even boots witht the furrrr
  • Changing leaves
  • Watching rugby matches (Leo just joined a team, can’t wait to support!)
  • This list could go on for hours…

Winter:

  • SNOW!
  • Holiday lights
  • SNOW.
  • Snow.
  • Freaking snow.
  • Glitter falling from the sky! SNOW.

How pretty is that?!

Oh the weekend! New hair, new hobby

Light hair was sent away. Back to being a dark brunette. Finally, and it feels amazing!!

This weekend was much needed. Went kayaking with my best friend, got some great advice then chomped on Mexican at Tarascas in Lincoln Park. This kayaking thing is a new fave. I went in Georgia a few months ago on a river and have gone out on Lake Michigan twice in the past few weeks. Super relaxing! And Tarascas? So tasty, but we ate way too much. Now just sitting, listening to the rain hit the glass and the thunder. Great weekend! Now prep for a long week ahead.

    Birthday Dinner – Dutch Baby

    Photo

Meet the Dutch Baby, a smaller version of the German pancake. My all time favorite meal from Walker Bros. Pancake House. I ate it all and now I’m going to relax and enjoy this food coma. Happy as a birthday clam. What’s your favorite birthday dinner?

Oh and I have something new and shiny on my right hand from the most wonderful man in the world! He makes my birthday so special every year.

    Don’t call me a foodie, Part 2

Another big meal attempt under my belt. Lasagna. Not the best in my opinion, but I’m comparing to my dad’s famous lasagna. He balked at my inclusion of ground turkey instead of italian sausage or ground beef. He offered some solid solutions to my shortcuts, i.e. adding some onions and ground beef to a quality jarred sauce, but my mom chimed in, “the sauce is key, must be homemade, I’ve tried every shortcut there is.” They are coming to visit me in a couple weeks, I’ll be having to lasagna making lesson. Leo loved it, and I’ll have lunch for the next six days. Little victories.

I was going to follow a recipe from Green Little Bites for Turkey Lasagna Roll-ups, but opted for the recipe on the Prince Lasagna noodle box. Trying to keep it simple.

Probably going to need to try following some recipes from my friend Lucia’s blog, My Big Fat Italian Life. It was her birthday this week, Happy Birthday girl!!, and I want to try out some of her recipes. I’ve been lucky enough to snag leftovers from her before. Anyone that says, “the socialite in me beat down the ‘wanna be skinny bitch’ in me and I caved,” is a good food-friend for me. She can be the foodie, I’ll continue eating her leftovers. A few of the best tastes I’ve had from her blog?

And I had some stuffed shells that were to die for. Have to get a recipe from her! And maybe discover the secret joy of cooking because, while I get it, I sorta don’t get it.

    Don’t call me a foodie

Alright, so if you’ve been reading or know me at all, you know that I actually don’t like food very much. For reference to my lack of food-aficionado-ness take a look at this old post… Leo, on the other hand is a dude. They LOVE food and lots of it. I’ve gone from being a non-big-dinner eater (two eggs and toast), to accommodating a bigggg dinner eater. Ah, the adventures of co-habitation! Going awesome, by the way.

While I don’t love food, I love taking care of people and making them feel special. In fact, that is on my perma-list of life to-dos – be kinder, help people more and make someone’s day brighter everyday. I’m starting to wonder if food bloggers actually only like cooking/baking because it brightens the days of the people that get to eat it. Right, back to the point – FOOD. First night actually cooking, not throwing food together, I made me potions, not dude potions. Within an hour, I had a hungry boyfriend on my hands.

Second night? I made the salad pictured above based loosely on a salad recipe from Once a Month Mom. You’ll notice the size of the second plate is a monster, but I was so scared of not feeding Leo enough that I sided with big. Needless to say, he laughed, ate quite a bit and I had a huge lunch the next day. I suppose this is called learning?
