In honor of #nyfw: A Blogger Inspired Purchase

As you know I was a slow adopter of this blogging thing, but now I've been bit. My latest time suck – fashion blogs. Due to a severe attraction to cotton tees, tanks and jeans, I am not a trendsetter. I love plain stuff. That being said, I love seeing what other people are wearing, buying, trying, deciding, all of it. But I haven't been inspired to purchase something that I've seen on a blog. Until today. This could become a dangerous-to-my-budget hobby. In anticipation for the fall, my current favorite season, I've been plotting some purchases.

Fall/winter wish list:
1. Utilitarian shaped bag
2. Cable knit scarf (purchased a couple weeks ago. great find. // Marshall's $6)
3. New coat (a cute one, not deadofwinter long black Bertha parka)
4. Waterproofer for my suede boots
5. Fleece (been rocking the same one since my junior year of high school!)

After reading Bonjour It's Jinah's post of her??fall favorites, I knew I'd found my number one on the fall wish list. I am now the lucky owner of one Klein Tools Canvas Tool bag from Home Depot. And yes, I'm aware that it's semi-amusing that I just purchased a purse at Home Depot but I like tools and I like repurposing. The kind sir that assisted me with my purchase in the Cartersville, Ga. Home Depot thought I was the funniest thing he'd ever seen. Great customer service, by the way, I recommend buying the purse-toolbag in store for the sake of a good laugh.

Photos soon to come when I get a camera cord. Ha. I'm so techno-advanced.

One of many joys of coming home!

That’s my kitten – Tibet, we call him Tibbles and I wish I could sneak him into my luggage. He’s not actually a kitten, but he was when we found him in a dumpster ten years ago. Isn’t he cute?

Also, I’m showing my mom this blog thing that I do once in a while… We are having social media lessons in the Nukem House this week. Grandma too! Wish me luck.

Ah, the joys of advertisements!

Fall_ads

Magazines! Oh Amazon.com and your effective email campaigning. I loathe you because I now have like eight magazine subscriptions. Maybe I should thank them for rekindling a lost flame? Each time one appears in the mail, I get the same giddy feeling. I run to my room, throw on some sweats (or shorts and a sports bra due to temps in the city) and jump onto the bed and analyze the cover. Getting ready for the upcoming season, seeing what the latest starlet is doing with her hair, opening the front cover. All of it is magical and very ceremonial. Totally irreplaceable, no sir, no ma'am I am NOT replacing my warm, delicious smelling paper and magazines with a cold brick of technology. I'll consider it once the perfume producers of the world have figured out to how to convey their smells through the iPad/Kindle/nextcooltechthing.

That brings me to my next point. I love ads. Not just the high fashion ads in Harper's Bazaar that lead to instinctual female salivation over the latest??structured??Fendi bag or Louis Vuitton mid-century glamour shot. Michael Kors (fall ads are my current favorite) – the colors, the season, the props, the clothes. Sure, they are all beautiful. But the real beauty? The story told by advertisements. So when the first magazine comes in, and I know there are six or seven more coming in the coming weeks, I prepare my brain for story time. I soak up the images, the feelings, the scents, the textures.??

Important to note that I maintain this ritualistic joy with the following magazines: Town & Country, Marie Claire, Harper's Bazaar, Shape, Redbook, Maxim, and Ikea's yearly catalog.??

My mailman might be wondering, what are the demographics of this household?
32-56 year old women with money to burn???18-36 year old male? He must live with a woman, or he would subscribe to Playboy.??Active and healthy??16-26 year old female? 28-46 mother with children in elementary school?

None of the above in case you were wondering. I just try to stay read up on demographics other than my own. And I'm a sucker for advertisements and discount subscriptions from Amazon.com.

First fall purchase – yay!

I love all seasons and I love that every season that approaches is my current favorite. So, in honor of my latest favorite season – I bought a cable knit scarf! This may seem crazy to my local friends in Chicago that are melting in the late August heat and humidity but it's not. I'm just truly that excited for the fall!

Cheers to scarf, boot, sweater and snow season approaching! And hot cider. Oh the list could go on and on…

Quarter Century Bucket List – Wish me luck!

I had a birthday this week, the big 2-4. Might not seem like a big deal, my coworkers think I???m crazy, but I feel old. Not because 24 is actually old, but because (almost) a quarter century is a heck of a lot of life to have lived! I figured this is a good time to make my bucket list ??? not for my whole life, but just for the year. Small goals are easier to achieve, right? I???m fashioning this bad boy after a list I read by a good friend Jeana (she manhandled her list, I plan to be as successful).

By the end of summer:

???????????? Volunteer once per month
???????????? Church every other month
???????????? Donate one third of my closet (hence only keeping the things that I wear)
???????????? Purchase all white sheets and comforter (ultimate luxury that is both impractical and utterly gorgeous)
???????????? Purchase television
???????????? Worry less
???????????? Drink more
???????????? Or should that be drink more and worry less?
???????????? Learn how to use the weight machines at my gym
???????????? Begin weight training
???????????? Join a rugby team (played in college, miss it dearly)
???????????? Wear more high heels
???????????? Eat more with my girlfriends and explore Chicago restaurants

???????????? Cook more food, eat more interesting foods (these two go hand in hand)

By the end of year 24:

???????????? Real estate education (because I don???t want to be uneducated when I buy my first house and because it has been a life long dream)
???????????? Snowboarding trip to Colorado (and meet the boyfriends family)
???????????? Visit brothers
???????????? While visiting brothers in LA – surf, find a gem at the swap meet, do ANYTHING reckless (drag race, motorcycle ride on the coast, dune buggies, Vegas?)
???????????? While visiting parents in Georgia see the historical places I should have already experienced but instead I visited the pool.??
???????????? Go to lunch, brunch, breakfast, dinner or coffee with my grandma more often (she is fascinating)

Wish me luck!

Not sure which is more neglected: blog or to-do list?

The magic of this post? Kills two birds with one stone, a blog post completed and a check off of my to-do list. Less neglected blog, less neglected to-do list. Other things knocked off the to-do list? Fresh paint on the nails, new sports bra purchased (this is only useful if I go to the gym tomorrow, which is also on my list), purchased a few tops, groceries purchased… Ok, truth – the shirts weren’t on my to-do list but I needed some more orange in my life and I walked away from TWO pairs of wonderfully cheerful orange kicks. Bonus addition to the list for the night? Signing up for Mint.com following posts about the site from @katierogers??on Chicago Now’s BrokeassBlog??and @nicklucido. And most important part of my evening? I smiled at strangers! That always makes a day a little more magical.

Hope your week is starting off great – Happy Monday!

Want to know the best part about unpacking?

Textbooks!

PhotoPhoto_2

I’m starting to unpack my boxes that have been in storage for the past year. It’s a wonderful process getting all organized discovering great treasures. Today’s unpacking treasure? Textbooks. First one on my list, “Understanding Terrorism in America” by Christopher Hewitt. You might wonder why i’m rereading college text books. No? Well I’m telling you anyways! In school there was never enough time to savor and enjoy a good scholarly text because of the pressure associated with reading – the looming exam in the distance. No exams immediately pending here. Time to read some textbooks on my commute. Oh the joys of commuting! A whole hour to read – my favorite thing about public transit.

Why the nickname/handle/blog title? Warning: LONG blog post

My first venture with social media was a forced situation, not pleasant. Identity theft is common, social media identity theft is not as common. While in high school during the rise of early social networks, and prior to lawsuits for digital bullying, a profile was created in my name with a photo that slightly resembled me (if I was a lingerie model) and my personal information. By personal information I mean my name, telephone number, life details, and most importantly/scarily… my address. The profile was discovered after several (more than ten) creepy phone calls to my house from men that wanted to meet me. As a seventeen yearold, this was petrifying and mortifying. Not only was I attempting to navigate high school, I was now thrown into the real world of online sex solicitations without my knowledge, let alone consent. The profile created under my name was every parents nightmare for their daughter.

Instinctively, we searched for the site after one of the callers explained where he found my information. My dad quickly found the page, my mom quickly freaked out, and I quickly started crying. All of this was very quick. In any crisis, I smile, I process, and then I say, “oh shit. plan of attack? Go!” With zero prior knowledge of any sort of social media, we emailed the company asking for the page to be removed. Step two, call the police. With that type of personal information out there, we felt this was logical. Not surprising, the police chuckled, explained there was nothing they could do, and said, “Sounds like a high school prank, did you make any enemies for yourself?” Again, I’m in panic mode so I’m simply absorbing everything coming my way.

I hang up and ask myself, “Wait, did that cop just ask me if I made any enemies?” As in, enemies are something I clearly brought upon myself, and I deserve this so-called high school prank? The email response from the folks at unsaid-social-network explained to me that without a “supina” there was nothing they could do. Correct, you read that as they wrote it, “supina.” My dad and I read the email with frustration not only of the situation but of the sheer stupidity of the person on the other side of the chain of communication. Someone claiming to be from the legal team just spelled subpoena incorrectly. Obviously we weren’t getting anywhere with them, but the site was removed. So, we bandaged my severely bruised ego, I vowed never to tell the story to anyone, and I swore off this “social media” devil for life.

Fast forward five-ish years. I’m a senior in college preparing to graduate and I’m fully aware of the networking, marketing, research, and FUN that is associated with social media. Like most my age, I use Facebook daily, my profile is set up on LinkedIn and I’m active watching this new Twitter trend that is spreading like wildfire. Next thing I know, it is 2009, I’m working in marketing, and I’m doing research on ways to connect with customers. I decide to try out Twitter but don’t want my real name associated with ANYTHING social media. Considering I had a fake name for most other things online, I considered using that, but hesitated because I was realizing the true value of social media. I needed something that said “Eliza” (me) without using my name. Do you remember the video-game character, Duke Nukem from the early to mid-90s? No? Google it. I decided to call myself NewNukem on Twitter because ‘nukem’ is phonetically similar to my name and I’m not the Duke, but I’m ‘new’ to the world of Twitter. So, NewNukem was created.

A wise word to the weary and untrusting of social media: everything is scary until you understand it. The best way to understand it is to do it, slowly at first. Skepticism is good, skepticism of powerful things is better. Social media is powerful, I was skeptical, I researched the hell out of it to understand the background, and now I love it. Go figure. And as of May 11, 2010, all things about me online have my real name associated with them. My name is Eliza, I am a recovering social-media-phobe.
